Many people think that batteries are all recyclable and easy to eliminate…we disagree. With increased technology, you may run into new batteries that will cost you money to scrap…and may not be worth the time.
We all know about the standard car and truck lead-acid batteries, but most tools and hybrid cars run on different types. One type of battery you will see a lot of is lithium-ion batteries. But they are not all the same.
Laptop batteries are generally Lithium-Ion…but they are different from the batteries from cordless drills and other cordless tools. One thing you definitely do not want to do is mix your lead-acid batteries with any other type of batteries.
Remember, there are some very harmful chemicals in different types of batteries, so if you plan on collecting and storing them for your next trip to the scrap yard, be sure to secure them in an area where they can’t be penetrated. You also want to ensure there is no chance of the batteries corroding while they are stored. So make sure the area is dry and a relatively dry place.
It is very common for most scrap yards to accept lead-acid batteries commonly found in cars and other vehicles. But if you have lithium and alkaline batteries from other devices and appliances, be sure to call up your scrap yard beforehand so you know if you can bring them in for scrap. If not, you don’t have to worry about spending time looking for them.
