Gold Recovery Instructions & Video for RAM Boards

How to recover gold from Memory boards

Our friend Mike the Scrapper has published some great videos about gold refining. He decided to share the written instructions so you could follow along and see the procedure in action. As Mike states in the video, please do NOT attempt this at home. These are serious chemicals and could cause a lot of damage to yourself or others.

Let’s Get Started

For this video, We used 106 RAM boards. The weight at the end may differ from what I have.

What you will need:

  • Vinyl apron
  • Chemical Resistant Gloves
  • Safety Goggles
  • Fume hood / If working outside, use a fan to blow the fumes away from you. (have a space where no person or animal will bother you)
  • Ram boards
  • Sheet metal cutting shears or pruning shears
  • Distilled water
  • Container to hold your ram boards
  • Beakers
  • Glass stirring rod
  • Containers to hold the excess waste acid
  • Coffee filters
  • Hot Plate or Coffee Maker (hot plate on low)
  • All Plastic Strainer
  • Wash Bottle
  • Measuring Spoons

The Chemicals:

  • Muriatic Acid
  • Nitric acid 67.2 concentration or Sub Zero
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Urea
  • Scrub Powder/Storm Precipitant or Sodium Metabisulphite
  • Baking Soda

Instructions:

  1. Cut fingers off ram boards
  2. Mix hydrogen peroxide with muriatic acid 50% / 50%
  3. Let sit in a warm area (under the sun for 24 hours)
  4. Mix if needed
  5. Use a strainer, coffee filter, and container to capture acid and any gold
  6. Rinse gold with distilled water & remove any on the ram fingers
  7. Rinse gold again and filter out water
  8. Place in a glass beaker and add 10ml Nitric & 10 ML Muriatic
  9. Place on a hot plate or coffee maker
  10. Let it sit and walk away
  11. Once all gold is dissolved, the liquid should be yellow
  12. Use a beaker, strainer, and coffee filter to catch the yellow liquid, and the filter will get the debris
  13. Slowly add water to the filter and rinse the 1st beaker to remove all the gold and debris.
  14. Now remove the filter and add 30 ml or more of distilled water.
  15. Add 1tsb of Urea to neutralize the acid. Add more if needed. You are ready for the next step if there are no more bubbles.
  16. Add 1 TSP of Scrub Powder (you may need more). The color will change from yellow to brown.
  17. Let the powder settle, and now use a filter and clean beaker to get the brown powder.
  18. Once in the filter, add more water to rinse.
  19. Let dry, and use a furnace to melt down your gold.
  20. If done correctly, you should have 99.5% 24KT gold.
