PCB Ballasts: What To Avoid
Not all ballasts are created equal, and PCB ballasts are a type you should steer clear of. These are harmful to the environment, and many scrap yards refuse to take them due to the challenges involved in proper recycling.
If you come across PCB ballasts, look for specialized hazardous waste recycling companies. Keep in mind that these companies may charge you a fee rather than paying for the material. It’s crucial to dispose of PCB ballasts responsibly to avoid fines and protect the environment.

What’s The Scrap Value Of Ballasts?
Because these units contain a large amount of contaminants, we suggest waiting until you have a large quantity of them before bringing them to your scrap yard. We don’t recommend ripping them open to scrap the copper separately. The amount of time and work you’ll have on your plate vs. the few extra cents you’ll gain with these materials separated likely isn’t worth it. Expect to get around $0.10/lb for these types of units.
