8 Must-Have Tools for Big Time Scrappers

This is one of those things that you do not want to read – but have to because you know how valuable some of these tools are. Grandpa always said, “You need the right tool for the right job.” How true is that?

Some Tools Are So Expensive!

Buying new tools is expensive, and sometimes you may think it is unnecessary – until you use that tool once for the right job and never return to the old way of doing things.

You may not buy these exact tools- and if you do not, it’s no sweat off our backs, but we would love to know what tools you buy and use, so please email us or comment below.

Having the right tools takes years to accrue – and once in a while, you have to spend money to make money, but you will never regret buying the best tools out there. We have heard stories of companies replacing or fixing old broken tools because they want their reputation to last.

Here are some of the bigger and better tools we have used, been told about firsthand, or would recommend.

Best Big Tools Suggestions for Scrapping

Husqvarna Demo Saw – Sometimes you need more than a chainsaw or a Sawzall to start cutting up some metal- this is the tool you need. This saw is gas-powered, and you definitely need some muscles to keep it under control, but once it starts cutting, you are good to go. It will rip through machined aluminum, copper, thinner grades of stainless, or even some ACRs. Yes, this may be expensive, but you never regret it when you buy the best, and this is the best.

DeWalt Air Compressor – Many scrappers have told us about the different tools they use, but some have become more experts in taking things apart, and using air is one of the best things we have seen. Having a lot of attachments and accessories like this easy 25-piece air accessory kit will certainly help. Air-driven tools often give you more torque and can get some hard-to-pull-off bolts; this is an excellent compressor.

DeWalt Hammer Drill/Driver Set – These are often staples around the scrap yards, but many people buy the inexpensive ones – remember, you cannot buy cheap tools and expect them to do good work. This set comes with a bag for carrying the drills, and then you can buy a nice drill bit set, so you have all the parts you need with you all the time.

STANLEY Power Station – This is one of those tools you don’t think you need until you need it. These portable power stations can help you jump-start cars and simultaneously charge your batteries or other accessories on the go. While it may not be an everyday essential tool, it will quickly become one if you are often on the road scrapping or at job sites that have little power. It even has a built-in air compressor to help blow up deflated tires. We all know someone who enjoys STANLEY products a little too much, so why not add to it?

Westinghouse Portable Generator – This is one of those tools that you cannot live or work without. How often have you been somewhere, whether a demo site, a construction site, or out in the middle of a field- and you just needed to plug an extension cord in? This is one of the best generators we have found, used, and recommended. The ability to power large appliances, as well as other devices at the same time, makes this unit one of the best generators that we have seen- and that we have used.

Hand Truck – Whether it is a barrel or a box, you always need wheels to move things. While mover’s dollys are great – they do not do the trick sometimes. This hand truck can lay down and become a rack or stack up and move multiple moving boxes, or you can use some of these straps to put a 55-gallon drum to it. Again- one of those tools you don’t know you need until you use it for the first time.

Portable Winch – We have seen many guys talk about the winches they use to pull up cars, and many of the people on our Facebook Group will vouch that these are some of the most essential tools they own and use. Whether you are pulling up cars, tools, safes, you name it – this is a must-have if you own a trailer or a truck.

Milwaukee Impact Wrench – When a standard drill or a hand wrench is not enough, this comes in handy. Some bolts are so tight sometimes that you cannot get them off and need extra help. Most people do not carry air compressors so this cordless model will make a big difference. One thing you must remember when you buy these impact wrenches is to buy a socket set to go with it.
