1000-Year Old Viking Treasure Found in Scotland

Sometimes all you need is a metal detector and some land. Derek McLennan had all of that and more when he recently discovered a 1000-year treasure stash in Dumfriesshire, Scotland. He was searching the area with his metal detector and came across one of the biggest treasure finds in Scotland’s history.

He uncovered over 100 items in a hoard of Viking gold and silver artifacts which is thought to be one of the largest in the country’s history. This isn’t anything new to McLennan though, as he also discovered about 300 medieval coins last year in the same area.

The Vikings were known to have been in the area centuries ago and this only adds to the rich history of the area. Some of the items McLennan found included a silver cup engraved with animals from the Holy Roman Empire and a gold pin what can be worth up to six figures.
